Radio station dropping Michael Savage after controversial remarks about autism
Friday, July 25, 2008

Plain Dealer Reporter

Michael Savage's controversial remarks about autistic children have gotten him booted off Cleveland's airwaves.

WHK AM/1420, the only Cleveland-area station carrying Savage's radio talk show, is break ing its contract with Savage's syndicator, Talk Radio Net work, said Mark Jaycox, who manages the Cleveland stations under the Salem Com munications corporate umbrella. WHK is owned by Cali fornia-based Sa lem Communi cations.

"This guy's a knucklehead, and I want to get rid of him," Jaycox said.

The Oregon-based Talk Radio Network could not be reached for comment late Thursday afternoon.

Savage's contract with WHK was supposed to extend to 2010.
The talk-show host last week described autism as a racket and said 99 percent of autistic children needed fathers to tell them to stop acting "like a moron."
Savage, who claims more than 8 million listeners a week, later posted a message on his Web site saying greedy doctors and drug companies were overdiagnosing autism.
Canton’s WCER AM/900 will continue to air Savage, said WCER general manager Jack Ambrozic. In Ohio, Savage also is heard in Portsmouth and Lima. WHK, based in Independence, plans to fill Savage’s 9 p.m.-midnight weeknight slot with a syndicated show and two local hosts, starting Monday, Aug. 4.

Syndicated host Mark Levine will air from 9 to 11 p.m. weeknights, and local author and radio personality Tom Kelly will host from 11 p.m. to midnight.

“Kelly and Company,” an author- interview show with Kelly and co-host Vic Gideon, is already heard Sunday afternoons on WHK. Kelly is expected to keep the weekend and weekday versions of his show.

Nicholas Phillips, a member of the Cuyahoga County Republican Party’s executive committee, will host a political talk show from 9 to 10 p.m. Thursdays during the election season, Jaycox said.

Jaycox decided to yank Savage after receiving about two dozen calls and e-mails from parents of autistic children, who said they were hurt by the remarks.

“I had one dad almost cry,” Jaycox said.

Talk Radio Defends Michael Savage

Here is the official press release.

Apparently they are rallying behind freedom of speech and trying to garner sympathy through mentioning that Michael Savage had a disabled brother.

Two things:

Freedom of Speech is a wonderful thing. I think that it is one of the things that makes our country so great. I also think that it has been misused time and time again to protect the stupid. (And I am allowed to say that.)

Secondly, you would think that having a painful past with a disabled brother would have led to a much more sympathetic viewpoint. (And certainly wouldn't have produced statements like 'what do you mean they can scream but they can't talk...morons'.)

Gimme a break people..

Thank you Hoover!

I received this and wanted to draw attention to it in regard to the sponsors of the Michael Savage show:

Nicole Sinclair has left a new comment on your post "Chiming in on the Michael Savage Autism Comments":

In response to this posting that lists Hoover as an advertiser associated with The Michael Savage Show and Talk Radio Network, I would like to clarify that Hoover and its parent company, TTI Floor Care North America, are not and have never been sponsors of or advertisers on The Michael Savage Show. While under the ownership of the Whirlpool Corporation, Hoover-branded ads aired during The Laura Ingraham Show on Talk Radio Network; however, ads have not aired on that program since December 2006 when Techtronic Industries Co. Ltd agreed to purchase the Hoover brand from Whirlpool. We value feedback from our customers and hope you will contact us directly should you have any questions about this important matter.Nicole SinclairTTI Floor Care North AmericaPublic Relations and Promotions Manager

Proud, But a Bit Scared

The kids got up way before I did today. I overslept--because I was feeling under the weather last night. Thankfully the kids were not.

I awoke to the loud squeals of delight. Through the moments of half-awake, half dreaming I heard something mentioned about 'cookies' and a 'surprise'.

It was the smell that got me out of bed.... chocolate? Mmmmm.

Turns out the four of them baked a batch of cookies first thing this morning. They were heavenly, chocolate chip peanut butter cookies that turned out perfectly.

I explained that I was proud of them for taking on this task, but that they should never cook unsupervised! Never, ever...EVER.

The biggest surprise? They did not eat a single one knowing that they weren't allowed to have cookies for breakfast and instead were all propped on blankets and pillows watching the early morning cartoons. I was proud, so they each got a cookie in the morning immediately.

The Visual Dictionary

I was browsing this site and saw a link to The Merriam-Webster Visual Dictionary online. You MUST check this site out...I thought it was awesome and know the kids will too. Go browse...go now!

Virginia Station Cancels Michael Savage

Local Station Drops Savage Over Autism Comments

Wednesday July 23, 2008

By day, Coy Barefoot is a radio host.

By night, he's the father of six-year old twins, one of whom is autistic.

"One day," Barefoot told his audience Wednesday on 1070 WINA's 'Charlottesville Right Now' program, "[my son Whitman] stopped looking at us, he stopped playing and he got very, very quiet."

Barefoot is a part of the same station that, until Wednesday, carried the Michael Savage show; a syndicated program broadcast on more than 300 stations across the country.

This is what listeners heard last week from Savage:

"I'll tell you what Autism is - in 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out...What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them 'don't act like a moron.'"

Those who work with autistic kids say they and their parents have enough obstacles to overcome without being doubted.

"The parents are really hurt by those kinds of comments," explains Michael McKee, Executive Director of the Virginia Institute of Autism. "In some cases, parents may have a child who's non-verbal, unable to communicate, may present with really challenging behavior and it's really a tough road for people and it's life-long."

But for the Coy Barefoots of the world, it's a life-long fight they won't give up.

"It is an awful tragedy that I would never wish on any child," he told listeners Wednesday, while fighting back tears, "and we have dealt with it the best that we can, but, in many ways, everyday is like treading water."

WINA Program Director Rick Daniels says station management decided Wednesday to end their affiliation with Savage because he refused to apologize for his comments, instead standing by them.

There is a silver lining to this whole thing; at the Virginia Institute of Autism they say they expect Savage's comments and all the attention they've drawn, to help their cause by generating awareness to the plight of autistic children.

Michael Savage Reaps What He Sows

Okay, so I came across this article here.

The New York Times has stated the following:

A group of seven Mississippi talk radio stations owned by Telesouth Communications has dropped Michael Savage’s nationally syndicated radio program over comments the host made last week suggesting that nearly every child with autism was “a brat” of inattentive parents. “Michael Savage’s comments about autistic children were beyond inexcusable and are unacceptable,” the station group said in a statement posted Tuesday on its Web site, supertalkms.com. The cancellation follows the decision on Monday by Aflac, the insurance company, to pull its advertising from the show.

I say good for them for standing up and not letting these comments be acceptable!

On his Web site, Michaelsavage.com, the host posted a letter on Monday in which he iterated the central point he said he had been trying to make on his July 16 program: that autism is too often misdiagnosed in the cases of children, or falsely diagnosed, at least partly as a means of wringing resources. “Let the truly autistic be treated,” he wrote. “Let the falsely diagnosed be free.”

Hmm... I admire the actual physician in the video I posted yesterday that explained that children are often, get ready for this... UNDER-diagnosed. Michael Savage is dead wrong in his opinion.

On July 16, Mr. Savage, above, referred to autism as “a fraud, a racket,” and asserted that what “99 percent” of children with autism most needed was a parent willing to tell them things like, “Don’t act like a moron.”

He also said 'idiot'. I would love to know how many parents out there use this parenting method. Last I checked name calling was something you taught your children NOT to do.

I truly pray that this man will re-evaluate his position on this. Perhaps he will inadvertently gain some education in the field of Autism before he decides to take a stand again.

Confession Time

I cannot possibly do this next post without making a huge confession...

Some of my children are named after TV characters.

Some of you already know this.

I feel the need to explain.

I had difficult pregnancies. Cumulatively I had one full year of bedrest. This meant hours upon hours of daytime TV and reruns. I must admit I enjoyed those many hours in front of the ABC soaps...the lightbulb just went off in some of your heads, didn't it?

Jagger's name came from General Hospital. I was *in eye candy love* with Jagger Cates, played by Antonio Sabato, Jr. He was my first pinup....gotta love that Tiger Beat.

So I lied...it was Vogue.

I loved the name....oh, I truly did and that is how we named my Jagger. Though I cannot count the number of times we've been mistaken for big MICK Jagger fans.

So then when Jagger was eight months old I found myself pregnant again, and still hooked on General Hospital. There was a character named Zander. I thought, hmmmm....Zander. I like it! I looked it up in the baby names book and found this:

It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "man's defender, warrior". From the Latin form of the Greek name Alexandros. Al, Alasdair, Alastair, Alaster, Alaxander, Alcander, Alcinder, Alcindor, Alec, Aleco, Alejandro, Alejo, Alek, Aleko, Aleksandar, Aleksander, Aleksandr, Aleksanteri, Alesandro, Alessandre, Alessandri, Alessandro, Alex, Alexan, Alexandre, Alexandro, Alexandros, Alexei, Alexi, Alexio, Alexis, Alic, Alicio, Alick, Alik, Alisander, Alissander, Alissandre, Alistair, Alister, Alistir, Alix, Alixandre, Allie, Allistair, Allister, Allistir, Alsandare, Alyksandr, Iskander, Iskender, Lex, Lexo, Sacha, Sander, Sandero, Sandor, Sandro, Sandros, Sandie, Sandy, Sascha, Sasha, Saunder, Saunders, Sikander, Xander, Zander, Zandro and Zandros.

Oh yes, Xander with an X...and defender of men. That would be a good fit! By the way, this is a picture of the 'other' Zander:

Not to be confused with this other Zander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer...as we are asked often if that is where we got the name. I have never watched a single episode of that show. And with all my confessing on here...I would tell you the truth.

So when Xander was 6 months old and my husband was a week away from the big snip-snip, we found out that we were having another baby. My soapy friends may be scratching their heads at this moment thinking....Milan...Milan....where did THAT come from?

It came from Drew Carey. I believe they were trying to make a joke in the direction of another city-named celebutant by bringing in a character with the same qualities named Milan. I was instantly in love with this name as was Jason.

So why would I confess this when it is so clearly off topic for my blog? Because they have sucked me in again...NO I AM NOT PREGNANT...

GH:Night Shift has started and though I have never shown interest in this particular spin-off it has two very compelling reasons for me to watch:

1. None other than the original Jagger, Antonio Sabato, Jr. is on again!! (No judgment!...my hubby is deployed and ASJ can join my other two boyfriends (Ben and Jerry) in my evening entertainment.)

2. The character of Jagger has a son...with Autism.

I cannot wait to see how good these writers are. And how tricky of them pulling me back in with two of my favorite things...

A blink and the week is gone!

Oh yes, one may think I've been slacking over here on my blogs...and one may be right! I will be back on track soon.

So what's going on you might ask?

Well, we had a wonderful time at VBS this week---it was a Jerusalem Marketplace theme. The kids spent each day learning things like:

-How to sing the Hebrew alphabet
-pottery making
-weaving
-instrument making
-bread making
-Messianic dance
-they made dreidels and learned how to play the game
-they raised money for children in India--over $900 cumulatively and Jagger's team won a Shema bracelet for being the number one team!
-they learned what a mezzuza was and what it is used for.

It was really an outstanding program...complete with Synagogue school with a real Rabbi and outdoor games for the time period.

Okay so on top of homeschooling starting again soon--this means paperwork galore, my next semester starting soon--exciting because I get to learn Biblical Greek this semester, and the homeschool conference starting--next week, and my in-laws coming in town next weekend, the kiddos wanting to fit the zoo in there somewhere, my daughter pretending to be a cat, the older boys fighting over who wants to cook more, Xander being convinced that Hobby Lobby is located inside the church and totally ticked that I won't take him RIGHT NOW (a story for another time)...

Whew...I need a pause.

Did I mention Xander has taken to hissing and growling at me lately as a warning?

Anyhow, give me a couple of days to catch up...but boy, do I have some stories for you!

Speaking of I have also managed to get in some personal reading time...I am so in love with this book at the moment...Put it on your 'must read' list. I promise you will not be disappointed.

See, I'm not that bad of a slacker..
